Southern Italy. Bay of Naples. Herculaneum and Vesuvius.
The small town ERKOLANO represents a modern part of ancient Herculaneum which was destroyed at eruption of Vesuvius 2 авг. 79 AD. Here it is necessary to stop off for two reasons: to examine excavation and to rise by top of Vesuvius where buses from the station go. If you intend to make both that, and another in one day, in the beginning go to Vesuvius, and make it as early as possible – buses do not go to lunch time.
HERCULANEUM (ежедн. 8. 30-17. 00; 10 euros, 18 euros including Pompeii), located at the sea, at the end of the main Erkolano Street, during an ancient Roman era was much less, than Pompeii; in the architectural relation Herculaneum too impresses less, but constructions here remained better, and they can be examined for once. It was no trading city therefore there is no central forum or an open main square; Herculaneum represents a network of direct streets along which country houses and benches were built. In the house with a mosaic atrium the courtyard decorated with a mosaic which has become wavy under the influence of a tufa remained. Behind it the Cervine house with the corridors decorated with magnificent still lifes, and an obscene statue of drunk Oat-flakes settles down.
In Herculaneum it is possible to see and extensive terms: фригидариум with the frescos representing fishes, and калъдариум with a deep bathroom and an apse in the form of the sink of a scallop supplied with a wash basin and water pipes. On the contrary there is a house of the Neptune and Amfitrita with perfectly remained wall mosaic representing god and the goddess, and frescos still lifes; under the house the wine bench with amphoras is located on wooden regiments. Nearby, in Kas del Bel Kortilya, some skeletons stiffened in poses in which they were found by cataclysm of 79 AD. On the opposite side of the street there is a house with a wooden partition where it is possible to see the matrimonial bed which has remained in inviolability, and in the next house – perfectly remained curtailed rope. Other finds are transported in the Neapolitan Archaeological museum. VESUVIUS dominates over life in the Bay of Naples. It is the unique volcano in continental Europe, still keeping the activity.
Throughout centuries there were hundreds eruptions, but only two of them, except eruption of 79 g, had serious consequences: in December, 1631 when about three thousand people were lost, and in March, 1944 (though anybody and was not lost, vicinities were devastated). Locals are afraid of new awakening of a volcano, and not without the bases: scientists believe that eruptions occur approximately time in thirty years (and the last was in 1944). Transporti Vesuviani buses go from Erkolano’s station to parking and souvenir benches at a crater; do not give in on arrangements of taxi drivers near the station. The campaign from parking to a crater on gravel paths will take about half an hour. The crater at top of Vesuvius (6 euros) is deep, wide, jagged "ashtray" of red rocky breed, the smoke from where is thrown up. It is possible to walk around, but be careful – a fencing old and shaky.
